Laser metal deposition can also be used to build up three-dimensional structures within certain limits. It is no match for other rapid prototyping processes in this respect but can be well worth using if smaller functional structures have to be applied to existing components. 

For example, welding on a small crosspiece can often be cheaper than milling from a block of material with the associated waste or welding on a small plate.
